Antique Victorian White Ironstone Plated Negretti & Zambra Thermometer featuring Royal Crest
This is a nice example of a rare late Victorian white ironstone thermometer in a cast iron case made by Negretti & Zambra.
Dating from the late 1800s, this thermometer was produced by Negretti & Zambra, renowned makers of scientific instruments at the time. Designed to read the temperature around the house, there are two holes at the top of the cast iron casing to attach this to the wall. With a white ironstone plate, its design is typical of its time, with the Royal Crest on display (indicating the company also supplied products to the Royal household) and different fonts used in different sections of the thermometer.
While the white ironstone backplate to this thermometer is in excellent condition, with the transfer still clearly visible and only some very light crazing, and the cast iron casing only showing limited signs of wear, the thermometer itself no longer does appear to be a little damaged. While it seems to respond to heat, there is a gap in the mercury which moves with gravity. Nonetheless, this is still a stunning and rare item to have on display in the home as a decorative item.
