Rare Antique Victorian Carved English Bread Board – Long Life and Happiness Motto
A lovely example of an antique late Victorian breadboard, dating from around 1900, with a rarely seen “Long Life and Happiness” motto, intended to be given as a wedding present in Victorian England.
English bread boards with mottos carved into them are becoming increasingly difficult to source. This is a particularly rare example and was intended as a wedding gift. At the time, it was common for bread boards to be given as gifts and a market soon appeared with carvings specifically carved which were aimed at the wedding market.
Flanked by simply carved wheat ears and a flower and leaves at its base, the board itself has a light, mellow colour to it.
This board has obviously been cherished and used through its life as there are knife marks and wear from use. Most notably, the motto and other parts of the border have worn down, although it is still legible.
Otherwise, though, the board is in overall good condition and sits flat. It’s a great board to have for display or use and would once again make for an interesting wedding present. A great opportunity to purchase a rare piece of antique kitchenalia.
