Antique Late Victorian Toleware Spice Tin with Floral Decoration & Individual Spice Canisters
A fantastic rare toleware spice tin, dating from the 1880s, with individual spice canisters for Ginger, Allspice, Cloves, Nutmeg, Cinnamon & Pepper.
This is a beautiful example of a Victorian metal spice box. While there is some age to the tin, the original decoration can still clearly be made out and most of the spice canisters retain their vivid original colouring. This is quite remarkable because the spice tins have clearly been in regular use, as there is a wonderful spicy aroma when they are opened.
The outside of the spice box has a wonderful and highly decorative floral pattern on all sides. While the top has worn and discoloured, each side is still very colourful. The original ‘Spice’ label on the top of the tin can just about be deciphered still.
Inside the tin are six wonderful small canisters for “Ginger”, “Allspice”, “Cloves, “Nutmeg”, “Cinnamon” and “Pepper. These have a golden colour to them.
Overall, this Victorian toleware spice box is in great antique condition. As is normal for toleware, there is oxidisation and wear all over the tin and canisters. This has most notably affected the top of the lid (which also has a few minor dents in it) and lids of the canisters. The Ginger canister is also affected more. However, the lovely black typography on both the lids and sides of the canisters is still very clear.
