Antique Victorian Ice or Sugar Figural Cleaver In The Shape Of A Bear

1930s antique Meredith Drew glass shop counter advertising display jar

A wonderful example of an antique Victorian steel chopper or cleaver for ice or sugar in the shape of a bear.

This is a solid quality and unusually shaped figural cleaver, in the shape of a bear. This cleaver has a great sturdiness to it, with the steel blade continuing through the handle, to offer counter balance when in use.

Figural and decorative cleavers like this were commonly used by confectioners for chopping sugar work or ice blocks. This one is slightly unusual, shaped as a bear, and its eyes and eyebrows can just be made out on etched into both sides of the steel blade.

This is a folk art piece, the steel being hand forged, possibly as a one off piece, and the handle being simply made and attached by rivets through the steel blade.

The chopper is in overall fair condition and is a solid piece. The steel blade has darkened and oxidised in places through age, and there also some small patches of discoloration. These could be cleaned up if desried, or the steel could be polished to produce a clean and shiny finish. Perfect for ongoing use as a herb chopper or for display.
