Antique White Ironstone Grocers Dairy Slab by WT Avery
An extremely rare and highly desirable antique white ironstone shop slab made by W.T. Avery.
These ironstone shop slabs were used in grocers or butchers shops to proudly display the goods on offer. In the absence of widespread refrigeration, ironstone slabs such as these were used to keeps goods, especially dairy products, cool.
This example was made by W.T. Avery and is a very rare example, advertising their Welsh stores on the transfer print on the base. Most likely, this was offered for sale to shops in Wales. As the black transfer print is to the base, it remains in excellent condition and is very attractive.
The slab has suffered some minor wear over the years. This is very common, particularly as they were in daily use.
There is crazing to the surface of this ironstone slab, which has discolored a little in places, with some spots of discoloration to a few glaze faults too. There is a surface crack to the glazing, although this is not a mahor issue. There is a tiny dent to the top of the edge, some minor restoration to one corner and also a small crack running along the edge of the surface (again, this isn’t a major problem and doesn’t penetrate through the ironstone). There is also a small chip to the inside rim of the base.
I have been picky in highlighting the wear to this slab. Overall, it really us in lovely condition, especially compared to others which come to market. It still looks fabulous and is certainly usable too.
