Antique Victorian Deeply Carved English Breadboard

antique edwardian 1920s smiths crisps shop display glass jar counter

A fine example of a carved English Bread Board, dating from the early twentieth Century.

This old carved wooden breadboard is in excellent condition, with the carved detail really crisp and clear. The top of the board has “Bread” carved in stylised script writing. It is flanked by leaves on each side of the board, framed at the bottom with a nicely carved flower. It is a lovely rich colour.

It’s likely this treen board has previously been on display as there are very few knife marks around the edge of the board, meaning the deeply carved detail is still very evident.

The board is in great condition for its age, with no splits in the wood. There are a few odd small splashes of paint in places, plus a smudge on the back. There are some knife marks from use and some scratches on the back of the board. Although there is a slight wobble when the edge of the board is pressed down, the board does sit flat and is perfectly usable.

Height, 2.5cm; Width, 30.5cm.
