Small Antique Victorian Carved Treen Butter Stamp Decorated with a Scottish Thistle

antique victorian carved scottish wooden treen butter stamp thistle

This is a listing for ONE antique deeply carved butter stamp. There are two available to choose from, both featuring a Scottish thistle.

Dating from the very early 20th Century, both these butter moulds are in excellent condition, with deeply carved patterns and rich patinas. These are small examples, measuring only up to 3cm in diameter across the face of the stamps. But what they lack in size, they make up for in the detail of the carving and their rich colouring.

The left hand stamp features a double thistle, and may have been intended as a wedding gift. The detail of the carving on this example is outstanding, with the thistle and foliage having different layers to it. This example measures 3.2cm in width and 5.7cm tall. The handle is integral to the piece and overall it’s in excellent condition, with just some scratches to the rim around the edge of the stamp and on the top of the handle.

The cased example is a simpler design but still has some nice detail to it, especially on the face of the stamp. There are some scratch marks to the outer casing as well as one old and long gone worm hole. This measures 2.7cm across the face of the stamp and 4cm in width overall. It stands 7cm tall.

Butter stamps like these make excellent decorative pieces of kitchenalia, and are also good to use either for decorating small butter pats or as use as biscuit stamps (they work particularly well on shortbread)
