Early Antique Victorian Deeply Carved English Bread Board with Welcome Motto
A lovely example of a large antique Victorian breadboard, dating from the mid to late 1800s, with a “Welcome” motto in a deeply carved ribbon banner and flanked by wheat ears.
This 19th Century breadboard has a wonderfully mellow patina and honey colouring. Although there is some wear to the decorative border, as it is so deeply carved it is still very prominent.
The border of this board is carved with the word “Welcome” in stylised, gothic style script, sitting in a layered ribbon banner. Carved wheat ears and leaves frame the bottom of the border. Considerable effort has gone into carving this piece, which may have been intended as a wedding gift.
The board is in overall excellent condition and sits flat. There are old knife marks from use, but these have blended well into the patina of the board, creating a natural timeworn appeal. There is a small knock to the rim of the breadboard on the left of the board but this has also blended in and doesn’t detract.
The board is slightly taller than it is wide which, taken together with the slightly more naive carving, indicated this was made by a layman. However, the fact that it has survived in such good condition for around 150 years is testament to the skills the carver no doubt possessed.
