Antique Late Victorian Carved English Wooden Breadboard with Staff of Life Motto
A lovely example of a good large sized antique Victorian breadboard, dating from the late 19th Century, with a “Staff of Life” motto flanked by a framed border, as well as leaves and a carved floral decoration at its base.
This breadboard has seen a lot of use in its time which, together with its rich honey colouring, adds a natural mellow patina and charm to the piece. It’s a lovely example of an antique carved English bread board which is still good for day to day use now.
The border of this board is carved with the word “Staff of Life” in stylised, gothic style script. Although this is worn towards the centre of the board, the carving is still very clearly defined and is still clearly distinguishable towards the outer edge.
The framed border, plus leaf and floral decoration are similarly worn yet also distinguishable.
As this board still sits flat, it’s a great piece for continued use in the home, as well as display. There are some knife marks from use. But these features, together with the worn mellow patina, add an honest integrity to this very attractive board.
