Antique Victorian Richly Coloured Carved English Butter Board with Willow Patterned Butter Pat Liner
This is a wonderful example of a late Victorian carved English wooden butter dish, complete with a willow patterned ceramic liner, with a rich hardwood finish.
Dating from around 1900, this deeply rich coloured treen butter dish is quite unique for its elaborateness. Normally, they are much plainer in style and not as wide. However, the wood on this example has been treated to give it a richer colour and grander feel. Although the carving is quite simple, the grand style continues in the use of a banner to frame the carved ‘Butter’ at the top of the board and in incorporating a shield design in the bottom half.
Although there is a small loss to the ‘U’ in the carving at the top of the board. The rest of the carving is nicely detailed, with effort made to stud the background with a nice star pattern.
The original willow patterned liner is in good condition, with a small amount of crazing on the back.
Overall, this is a quality piece of antique Kitchenalia.
