Antique Victorian Carved English “Bread” Board with Rare Heart Detail

1930s antique Meredith Drew glass shop counter advertising display jar

A wonderful Victorian carved English breadboard, with the word “Bread” clearly carved into its border.

This is a great example of a beechwood Victorian carved bread board, dating from the late 1800s. Carved breadboards were extremely popular household items at the time. This bread board is quite rare, also featuring a carved heart at its base. This is quite apt considering these types of breadboard were often given as wedding presents.

Despite its age, the carving on this “Bread” board is still very nicely defined and clear, flanked by simple carvings of leaves on each side of the board.

This antique beech breadboard has a great colour and is in very good condition. There are normal knife marks from use, more notably on the middle section. The middle part of the board has also dried out a little but the board has been waxed, and will be remedied with more regular ongoing waxing too.

There are two small splits on the outside of the board, which are more notable on the back than front of the breadboard. This has resulted in a very slight warp, meaning the board can be pressed down slightly to the left and right. However, this doesn’t affect use in any way.
