Antique Victorian Treen English Breadboard with Deeply Carved ‘Want Not’ Motto

antique victorian carved english treen wooden deeply breadboard bread board want not motto

A wonderful example of an antique Victorian breadboard, dating from the late 1800s, with a “Want Not” motto flanked by wheat ears.

This 19th Century breadboard just oozes character and charm, with its rich colour and patina. It’s a lovely example of an antique carved English bread board. The border of this board is carved with the words “Want Not” in stylised, gothic style script, with wheat ears and simply carved leaves on each side.

Although the carving of the leaves at the bottom of the board have now faded a little, the ‘Want Not’ motto still stands out proudly against a nice patterned backdrop.

The board is in overall great condition. There are old knife marks from use and the board has taken on a darker look in the centre, also a result of use and possible contact with oils and grease. But these have blended well into the patina of the board, creating a natural timeworn appeal.

The board sits largely flat but can be pressed down onto the right side by 1 or 2 millimetres. However, this doesn’t affect use and it still displays well.
