Antique Victorian Carved English Bread Board with Gothic Style Font, Leaves & a Flower

1930s antique Meredith Drew glass shop counter advertising display jar

A fine example of an antique Victorian English Bread Board, with classic carved detail and script, dating from the very early part of the twentieth Century.

This old carved wooden breadboard is in excellent condition, with the carved detail still very clear. The top of the board has “Bread” carved in stylised Gothic style script writing. It is flanked by leaves on each side of the board, framed at the bottom with a nicely carved flower.

The board is in great condition for its age, with no splits in the wood. It still sits nice and flat. There are knife marks both to the front and back of the board from use over time, which give the board a lightly worn patina. Most notably, there are two deeper knife marks to the middle of the board. There is also a patch of discoloration, possibly a burn mark, to the bottom right hand side of the board, which is more notable on the back. However, all these aged characteristics add to the appeal of this antique item.

The board is also quite pale in colour from use over time. We have applied a layer of wax and polished the board (the board is still safe for use), and more regular waxing will help to enrich the colour further.
