Rare Antique Early 20th Century White Ironstone Carving Platter – The “Hold-Fast Carving Dish” By Grimwades
This is a fantastic and rare example of an extra large white ironstone carving platter, produced by Grimwades Winton in the early part of the 20th Century.
Dating from around the 1920s, this patented “Hold-Fast Carving Dish” is a scarcely seen item. A great, large size, this platter is large enough to carve a significant family roast dinner upon!
Always seeking out ways in which its kitchen equipment could be as practical and useful as possible, this carving dish epitomises Grimwades pieces. With a dipped centre, and moulded prongs for the meat to sit upon, the aim was to ensure meat didn’t slip on the platter when being carved. A lower channel and carefully placed holes on either side of where the meat laid also ensured the juices could flow away. It’s a super designed piece which is still so useful today as well.
This carving platter has seen some use over the years, and consequently has crazing all over, which has stained on the top from where meat has been carved on it. However, aside from this, it is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. There is just one minor firing fault to the edge rim, plus normal wear to the base.
