Early to Mid 20th Century Gourmet Pie Cup Pie Funnel
Nice example of The Gourmet Pie Cup patented pie funnel or pie vent, dating from the early to mid twentieth Century.
Featuring a black transfer print label, this collectable pie vent is made from white stoneware. It reads, “THE GOURMET PIE CUP, RD NO. 369793. The transfer itself is in great order and is still very clear.
At the beginning of the twentieth Century, pie funnels gained in popularity. Earlier pie vents tended to be plainer with chimney funnels. Manufacturers then looked to improve the designs, experimenting with a fuller cup with venting holes in the top, like this piece.
The patent for this design was granted in 1901, which described it as “improved crustholder and vent for pies, tarts and the like”. It was intended to allow steam to escape while preventing the juices from escaping.
Perfectly usable, this pie vent would also look good proudly on display in a kitchenalia collection.
Like many antique and vintage pieces, this pie vent does show a few signs of its age. There are some small marks and specks of discoloration in places. There is also a very faint hairline crack on the top, leading to one of the vent holes. But it’s a sturdy piece.
