Antique French 19th Century Illustration – l’Epicier – by Jacques-Adrien Lavieille
A beautiful example of a sweet antique French illustration of a grocer, titled l’épicier.
The print dates to the mid 19th Century. The illustration was produced by Jacques-Adrien Lavieille, who was known at the time for producing illustrations for books and magazines. It’s a great subject, and gives the impression of a very hard working grocer.
The picture is in an old black frame, but I’m unsure of its date. It seems to have a plastic, rather than glass, face to it and there is a small chip on the rim of this although this sits under the frame itself. The frame has some wear to it, with scuff marks to the edges. The back has also been secured in place with masking tape, which isn’t fully secure. The picture is therefore a little loose. I would recommend refitting some newer, more secure tape.
The picture itself also shows signs of its age with some age marks and spots. On the whole, though, this is a charming illustration which would add an antique and vintage touch to your interior decor.
