Rare Edwardian Large White Ironstone Scale Plate With Black Transfer Print Advertising For Day & Millward

1930s antique Meredith Drew glass shop counter advertising display jar

A wonderful example of a large Edwardian ironstone scale plate, in lovely condition, dating from the early 1900s.

This ironstone slab is a wonderful ornate example produced by renowned scale manufacturers, Day & Millward of Birmingham. As well as featuring advertising for the firm, with “DAY & MILLWARD. PATENTEES. BIRMINGHAM” in black transfer print at the base, the scale plate is very ornate with the Royal Crest and Justice symbols also featuring prominently. It also has wonderful detailing of features like the lions’ faces and a monogram of the Day & Millward initials.

These ironstone plates are great for serving cheese or butter on in the modern kitchen as the ironstone keeps them cool. They also work well as charcuterie platters. Being one of the larger sized scale plates available, it is the perfect size for entertaining. It is also very sturdy and heavy, weighing nearly 2kg!

This scale plate is in good condition for its age. The transfer print on the face of the plate is still very clear, and there is no crazing, cracks or chips to the plate. There are surface scratches and scrapes to the plate in places from where it has been in day to day use in a grocers or provision shop, as well as some age spots in places which have discolored. These are more notable on the sides and back of the plate, where it would have been rubbing against a cast iron set of scales regularly. Nonetheless, it is still an extremely handsome and attractive piece of antique kitchenalia.
