Antique Early 20th Century EPNS Butter Knife with Deeply Carved Treen Wooden Handle

1930s antique Meredith Drew glass shop counter advertising display jar

A wonderful example of a deeply carved treen handled EPNS butter knife, dating from the early twentieth Century.

The hardwood handle features the word “BUTTER” deeply carved and framed on it. The carving has hardly worn, meaning the detail is still very clear, which is quite rare for smaller wooden handled utensils. The wood has a rich, warm colour to it and is possibly made of oak. The EPNS blade also has engraved floral detail.

The butter knife is in overall good condition. The wooden handle is still in great condition. The EPNS blade has yellowed and also has darker tarnishing in a number of areas. However, this doesn’t detract and in some ways complements the richer colour of the wood on this piece. It is a wonderful piece of carved English kitchenalia.

Length, 18cm; Widest point of blade, 2cm
