Antique Early to Mid 20th Century Carved English Sycamore ‘Bread’ Board
A wonderful carved English breadboard, made by Bramhall in the early to mid 20th Century, with the word “Bread” clearly carved into its border.
This is a great example of a carved English bread board. Carved breadboards were extremely popular household items at the time. This breadboard were made by one of the most famous manufacturers of breadboards at the time, Bramhall, notable for the use of a teardrop in the top of the carved letter ‘B’ of their boards.
Despite its age, the carving on this “Bread” board is still very nicely defined and clear, flanked by a simple frame, a rosette at its base and carvings of leaves on each side of the board.
This antique breadboard has a great colour and is in very good condition. There are normal knife marks from use, more notably on the middle section. It appears to have also been used quite recently. The impact of these could be softened by regular waxing. There is also wear to the carvings, although they are all still clearly visible.
The board sits flat and is a great piece either for ongoing use or display as part of a kitchenalia collection.
