Antique 19th Century Deeply Carved Fruitwood Confectionary Mould Featuring Britannia

1930s antique Meredith Drew glass shop counter advertising display jar

This is a fantastic example of a 19th Century carved treen wooden gingerbread mould, featuring Britannia riding the waves, pulled along by horses.

This is a very intricate and well carved antique mould of a rare subject, most likely intended as a mould for sugar or gingerbread. The carving is very detailed, with several layers and a significant amount of detail especially around the features like Britannia’s fork and the horses’ heads.

It is in excellent condition. There are some old scratches to the surface of the mould, and knocks and dents to the edges, which is very normal for these types of items. The mould has at some point been backed onto an oak panel, probably for display purposes, which has old traces of long gone worm.

This is a wonderful historic piece, depicting a British icon in a setting very much of its time.
