Antique 1930s Travelling Eggs Box By The Dairy Outfit Company – The ‘Hammock’ Postal Box

antique 1930s wooden travelling eggs box hammock post postal dairy outfit company

A rarely seen example of a postal egg box made by the Dairy Outfit Company in the 1930s.

This travelling eggs box is an excellent display piece to have around home. Each side of the box is clearly printed EGGS, in black typography. The maker’s mark for the Dairy Outfit Company also appears on the top of the box, although this has now faded a little.

The Dairy Outfit Company produced a range of shop equipment, including egg boxes in a range of sizes. This ‘Hammock’ box was designed to be able to send eggs by post. Capable of holding one dozen eggs, each compartment was lined with felt in order to protect the eggs. Although the felt has worn a little in places, this example is largely in tact. The original advertising- showing the full range and prices of the different boxes available, is also largely in tact, attached to the lid of the box.

This box is in overall excellent and clean condition. It is missing the leather strap which would have fixed the box closed, and the lid has also warped very slightly, with the left side raised a little. Nonetheless, it is an excellent feature piece to have on display in the home.
