1930s Exceptionally Carved Bread Knife with Stainless Steel Blade by Viners

1930s antique Meredith Drew glass shop counter advertising display jar

An exceptional example of an antique carved English wooden bread knife, with a Viners stainless steel blade, dating from the 1930s.

This is a super carved English bread knife, with exceptional attention to detail in the carved handle, which features several layers of a deeply carved pattern. The fine detail really would have required an exceptional level of workmanship. The blade is early to mid Century, made by top cutlery makers Viners.

Due to the level of workmanship involved in producing the handle on this knife, it is possible that this was either commissioned as a one-off piece or the blade was commissioned to add the handle to (which possibly dates from an earlier period).

The excellent condition of the knife shows it has barely been used. The stainless steel blade has a serated edge and just a few little tarnished marks on it. The handle has no wear, although there is a slight darker patch of discoloration on the rear side of the knife.

This is a perfect item to add to a kitchenalia or treen collection. The level of detail and workmanship really stands out.

Length, 34cm; Width of Blade, 2.5cm; Width of Handle, 3cm.
