1920s Carved English Bread Knife with Advertising for Allinson

1930s antique Meredith Drew glass shop counter advertising display jar

A wonderful English deeply carved wooden sycamore bread knife, dating from the early to mid twentieth Century.

This treen bread knife has been engraved “BREAD” which is very deep, with little wear, and clearly stands out on the piece. It is made of sycamore and is quite pale in colour, and has a lovely well made final end. The stainless steel blade for this is quite unique in that it was made as an advertising piece for Allinson, renowned bakers based in the United Kingdom. The blade has the ‘Allinson’ logo etched onto it.

This knife is in fair condition for its age. There is some minor discoloration to the carved wooden handle, and some very small spots of tarnishing on the blade. Tarnishing is more notable on the collar. The blade on this piece faces in a different direction than normally found on these types of bread knives, so it is possible that there is an old repair and I would therefore urge caution in use, although the knife does feel quite sound. It would make a lovely feature as part of a kitchenalia or treen utensil collection.
